New Technology

Besides new computerised instrumentation that assists us in the eye examination, new spectacle lens designs are making spectacles more user friendly and cosmetically appealing. The "office" lens is an extended focus reading lens that allows you to see close-up as well as objects up to 2m away. This means that working at a computer and moving around in the office while wearing reading glasses is now possible. Every spectacle wearer should also consider the latest anti-reflection coating that allows more usable light into the eye whilst cutting out unwanted reflections caused by computer screens, overhead lights, car headlights, etc.

"Plastic" or polymer photochromic ("sun-sensitive") lenses are also becoming more popular due to reduced weight and coatings that prevent scratching. These lenses used to be more expensive than glass, but this is also a thing of the past as we can now supply them at prices very close to that of glass. Please ask about savings "Colormatic" lens brands.

Anti-reflective coatings have also been improved to be more resistant to dirt and fingerprints. These coatings not only enhance the cosmetic appeal of the lenses (especially in higher prescriptions), but also reduce reflections and glare when driving at night and working on computers.

Regular Eye Examination

Clear and comfortable vision and good ocular health can only be achieved through regular eye examinations. Every 2 years for most people, more regularly for diabetics or those with systemic disease such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol and those with chronic eye disease like glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease where "first you feel nothing and then you see nothing." Glaucoma is not just an increase in eye pressure, as nerve damage can be seen before the pressure goes up and in some people, the pressure can stay "normal". Assessment and digital photographic documentation of the nerve and the back of the eye helps us record diabetic retinopathy, the optic nerve head in glaucoma and any other abnormalities for future follow-up and evaluation.

Contact Lenses

We now have all new designs such as: bifocal/progressive disposable soft contact lenses and 30 day extended wear lenses made of Silicone. It is worth trying these new lenses if spectacles are interfering with your lifestyle, sport or hobbies.

Silicone soft lenses are now providing more comfortable vision with more oxygen transmission to the eye than older generation lenses. These allow many people more hours of hassle-free wear, and less red eye problems associated with contact lens wear. Daily disposable lenses are another option available.
